Content types are the backbone of the CMS. When your CMS is installed, the necessary content types were also installed. You can add new content types by installing the appropriate packages (RPMs). This lets you share content types with other companies using the CMS.
When you create a content item, you specify the content type first. This loads the appropriate information for the item, including the unique, basic properties that the author will fill in. These basic properties provide consistency across the CMS so that all content items of a specific type include fields for the necessary information and are displayed the same.
In addition to the unique properties of each content type, you can also use any metadata scheme. We optionally offer the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI). You can get more information on Dublin Core at http://dublincore.org. For information on how to properly use Dublin Core, your site administrator or policy maker will provide you with appropriate instructions on how your organization will be using metadata.
Each default content type is associated with a parent content type. You cannot modify these content types and you will only use them if you add new content types programmatically. The CMS includes the following parent content types:
Lets you add different types of content to the content item, including images and text.
Lets you add only text to the content item.
Lets you add information appropriate for an article, including a captioned image.
Each content type includes specific properties. If one of the default content types does not meet your needs, you can add two kinds of new content types:
Add new content types through the UI, known as a user-defined content type (UDCT). You can base the UDCT on an existing content type or create it from scratch. Make sure you specify a lifecycle before it is time to publish any content items based on the content type or users won't be able to publish it.

If you don't base the UDCT on an existing content type, you have to add the appropriate authoring kit items or users won't be able to add any content to the content item. |
After creating the child content type, modify it to meet your needs.
Add new parent or child content types programmatically. You typically have this done when you have specific requirements or want to import large amounts of data into the CMS, but can also be used to create custom content types to meet your needs. For more information, see the Red Hat Content Management System Developer Guide.
You can install the following content types:
The following sections describe some of the content types that you can install, including the definition and parent content type.
