Chapter 3. Deployment Software Guidelines

Red Hat recommends the following software setup for running its CMS product:

Operating System

Red Hat recommends running Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS on x86 processors.

Application Server

Red Hat CMS requires a Java application server. Red Hat recommends using Red Hat Stronghold in conjunction with Tomcat. An alternative to Tomcat is Resin, which is not open-source, but offers good performance at a relatively low price.

JVM

Red Hat has tested a variety of JVM's and found two general recommendations for best JVM performance on Red Hat Enterprise Linux. For Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS 2.1, the IBM 1.3.1 JDK provides the best performance. For Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS 3, the best performance is with Sun 1.4.1 JDK. As other JVM implementations come to support NPTL, you may want to revisit this portion of your deployment to see how JVM performance has improved.

For further information about Red Hat Enterprise Linux specific JVM issues, refer to the release notes for your specific version.
