The most expedient way to install a milestone release of Geronimo is to download and unpack the .zip or .tar.gz file for that milestone. No additional steps are necessary, and you will get a default, working configuration out of the box. However, with this approach, you aren't able to change any of the default configuration parameters (such as network ports).
