I notice that the Symbian OS v8.0 Java platform includes support for the Unified Emulator Interface (UEI). What is the UEI and how will this benefit developers?

Answer:

The J2ME Unified Emulator Interface specification (UEI) defines a set of command line extensions that allows UEI-compliant emulators to seamlessly integrate with standard tools and IDEs such as Sun One Studio, Mobile Edition, JBuilder and CodeWarrior, Wireless Edition, as well as the J2ME Wireless Toolkit.

Symbian OS, v8.0, introduces UEI support into Symbian's generic MIDP emulator, enabling licensees to produce SDKs which more tightly integrate into the popular IDEs. Symbian's UEI implementation supports:

adding the emulator to the IDE
making it the IDE's default emulator
launching and running the MIDlet from within the IDE
debugging the MIDlet using the IDE's debugger
