The GNOME desktop features a separate office suite. These programs are generally lighter and faster than the programs in the OpenOffice.org suite, and have fewer features as a result. But this may be exactly what you want. The Suite has excellent compatibility with other major Office suites, such as Microsoft Office.
The GNOME Office Suite includes the following software:
A word processor (Abiword);
A spreadsheet (Gnumeric);
A database management program (GNOME-DB);
A diagram editor (Dia);
Two graphics applications (Inkscape and The GIMP); and
A project management application (Planner).

Each of these applications can also be installed separately. |
To install the GNOME Office suite:
Install the gnome-office package from the “Universe” repository (see Chapter 3, Adding, Removing and Updating Applications).
The Office applications can then be found in the menu at ->, and the Graphics applications can be found at ->.
