Migrating your settings and documents

Ubuntu can help your transition from Windows. Settings such as emails, bookmarks, and even your current wallpaper can be migrated.

At this stage of installation an option to migrate settings is available. Select a detected operating system from the list.

Now a list of items to import is shown. Click the selection boxes of the items you want to migrate.

Enter your name and a username is generated. You can change this to something more memorable if you wish.

Lastly, click Forward.

[Caution]

Pay particular attention to the password section - by choosing a more complicated password, you can help to make your computer more secure. You must also ensure that you can remember your password correctly, including the case of the letters you use ('ABC' is different to 'abc').

When choosing a password, try to use a combination of letters, numbers and punctuation symbols which spell out a random word (e.g. p0tato!). This will make your password harder to guess if someone tries to access your computer without your permission.

What to do if your settings are not detected

If Ubuntu does not detect your Windows installation, then click Forward.

The next screen asks you to create a user account. Enter your name and a login name is generated. Then enter your password and confirm it.

Lastly click Forward.

You will still be able to import your data from the backups that you made earlier (see Chapter 5, Migrating your data into Ubuntu)
