There are a number of websites devoted to the Symbian OS developer community. This section will list those resources found on the official Symbian, UIQ, Nokia and Sony Ericsson web sites.

Symbian Developer Network

General web-based support for Symbian OS development is provided by the Symbian Developer Network. Good places to start include:

• The Tech papers provide tutorials and overviews of a wide range of areas. The Getting Started section provides useful background papers on Symbian OS coding idioms, and on UI design.

• Developer FAQs and Tech Tips is worth searching if you are having problems with the details of an API, or with tools setup and usage.

Announcements and discussions take place on the public newsgroups discussion.general (general Symbian-related discussion) and discussion.epoc.C++ (C++ development specific).

If you like to learn from source code, there are many open source projects. A list is maintained by DevNet at Open source.

If you want to see what technologies and services are already available for Symbian OS phones, Symbian Partners provides a comprehensive directory.

There are numerous commercial and enthusiast web sites for Symbian OS. A list is maintained at Community links.

The Symbian Signed web site is a separate site devoted to certification of installable applications.

UIQ

You can find more information about developing on the UIQ platform from the developer area of the UIQ web site. In addition, the UIQ Developer Community Web Portal provides developers with support and services from UIQ 3.0 onwards. Support for previous versions of UIQ (UIQ 2.0 and UIQ 2.1) is handled directly by the handset manufacturers which use UIQ in their products, for example, the Sony Ericsson Developer World web site. More information about handset manufacturer SDKs based on the UIQ platform is available from the UIQ web portal.

S60

The S60 section of Forum Nokia is the foremost resource for S60 development. Within this site, there is information on tools and technologies, SDKs, discussion groups and training. There is also a separate website called S60.com which is a good online source for all S60 related information. The site includes S60 product information and press releases as well as providing the latest developer resources for the S60 platform. The site is common for all S60 licensees and is managed by Nokia Technology Platforms.

Symbian Press publishes a wide variety of books for those new to Symbian OS, and intermediate or advanced programmers. Some books cover general aspects of Symbian OS, while others examine particular areas in depth (for example, communications programming, connectivity, operating system internals and platform security). A number of the books are also available in electronic format and have been translated to additional languages.

The Symbian Academy is a Symbian initiative to engage academic institutions with Symbian by providing the requisite support and materials for the establishment of Symbian OS-based university courses.

The example code which accompanies this tutorial was based, very loosely, on an example of a file manager application from Sony Ericsson Developer World.

The book, Developing Series 60 Applications, was used when porting the application to S60.
