Question:
I am developing PC connectivity software for Symbian OS phones using Symbian's QI Connectivity SDK. Which phones can I target ?

Answer:
At time of writing (20/9/2004) all phones based on Symbian OS v6.1or later are mRouter-enabled so should be compatible with the SCOM technology on which the QI Connectivity SDK is based, with the exception of Nokia phones based on Symbian OS v7.0s or later (6260, 6620, 6630, 7610, 9300, 9500), other than the Nokia 6600. The connectivity for these phones depends on Nokia's own OBEX-based solution, so the phones are not mRouter-enabled and cannot interact with SCOM. It is likely that future Nokia phones will be similarly incompatible with SCOM. Series 60 licensees will however be able to choose between Nokia's solution and Symbian's QI solution, depending on their assessment of market needs.

Note that although the Symbian Connect Runtime installer is included in the SDK, the end-users must obtain this component separately. One way this can happen is if the end-user installs a PC Suite based on SCOM. Currently, the following Symbian OS phones are shipping with such PC Suites based on SCOM technology:

Siemens SX1
Sendo X
Motorola A1000

Developers who wish to provide connecivity solutions for other compatible (i.e. mRouter-enabled) Symbian OS phones need to obtain the right to redistribute the Symbian Connect Runtime from Symbian.
