Question:
I've Symbian Signed my application, but on some phones there are still installation warnings. What could be the cause of these warnings:
"Installation Security error. Unable to install", and
"Application is untrusted and may have problems. Install only if you trust provider."?

Answer:
There will be installation warnings if the installer is unable to find a valid root certificate.

The warning "Application is untrusted and may have problems. Install only if you trust provider." occurs if the phone does not have an appropriate root certificate (you can confirm this by pressing "View Certificate", and seeing the message "Unable to locate root certificate.").
See the Symbian Signed FAQ (https://www.symbiansigned.com/app/page/faq) "What should I do if I don't have a Symbian Root Certificate on my phone?" for information about what phones are affected and how you can get the certificate on your phone.

The warning "Installation Security error. Unable to install" occurs if a root certificate exists but it is invalid. A certificate might be invalid for a number of reasons, the most likely being that the current date is outside the validity period for the certificate. To check this you should first ensure the phone is set to the current date. You can also check the certificate information for the expiry date.

Note:
  • The actual warning displayed will depend on the phone UI and localisation. However the approach for determining the cause is the same; check that there is an appropriate certificate and that the current phone date is within the valid range for the certifcate.
  • This FAQ covers the case where the SIS file is known to be Symbian Signed. See FAQ-1229 for a discussion of the behaviour when the application is signed only with the ACS Publisher Certificate.
