To connect to the game you first need to create a character. Please refer to Section 2.1, “Character Creation” for details. This section will guide your new character through several of the first things you can do when you enter the game. It will show you how to move around, look around, talk to other players, talk to NPCs and get a quest. The main game screen gives you a 3D view of the world that surrounds your character. Your character's starting position is determined by the race you chose. Not all races will see the plaza below. You can look around by turning using the Left and Right arrow keys located on your keyboard. You can walk forward or backward by pressing the Up and Down arrows on your keyboard. You can run to move faster. To run just hold down the Shift key while walking. You can look up and down by using the Page Up and Page Down keys. Alternatively, you can press the Tab and move the mouse to look around freely. To turn off mouse looking, press Tab again. You can change the point of view by pressing the M key. This will cycle through five different views: first person, three third person modes and free rotation. In the bottom right corner of the screen is your Chat Window. It is transparent by default so as not to interfere with your vision. Hover your cursor over it to make it become opaque. By default, the Chat Window will show you everything said to you, and in your vicinity. You can use the /say command to talk to people quite nearby, the /shout command to yell something to all players in the area and use the /tell command to talk to only one player in particular. To experiment with the following commands, click in the Chat Window and then type in the command. To issue a command, it must begin with the '/' character. Here is a list of available chat commands: /say Hello! - Say hello to the people nearby. /shout Hi - Greet all the players in the city or region. If a character with name Eliandrus shouts: "Hi!", everyone will see: "Eliandrus says Hi!" You can use the /tell command to talk to a specific player using this syntax: /tell player_name message. However, since you have only just joined, you might not have anyone to talk to! To find which players are on-line use this command: /who An additional command can help you to express certain actions you want to perform: /me action - Perform an action seen by people in your vicinity. eg. /me waves Everyone else will see 'Eliandrus waves'. In the PlaneShift world you will meet a lot of people, some are players, others are characters controlled by the PlaneShift server (NPCs). Those NPCs are useful for you to learn more about your surroundings, for buying and selling things or to get or proceed on a quest. There is more detailed information on NPC interaction in Section 2.10, “NPCs”. The following example only applies to races that spawn in Hydlaa. If you are an Enkidukai, you will have appeared in the city of Ojaveda and you will need to find your way to Hydlaa. Let's find an NPC to talk to, who will give you your first quest. From the Hydlaa Plaza, turn around until you can see the green hills in the background. In front of the hills should be a small shack with smoke coming out of it. Walk toward the shack. Standing near the shack, you will meet Harnquist, the Smith. Click on Harnquist with your right mouse button. You will see him appear in the Target area of your Status Window. Once targeted, click Say in your Chat Window and say "Hello". After greeting Harnquist, let's get down to business. Say "Give me a quest.". He will respond with something like: "I need some Gold Ore to complete a commissioned weapon. Can you go and acquire some for me?". To this, you should respond with "Yes". Congratulations - you have your first quest. Open your Quest Window to see the quest recorded in your log. Now, where can an adventurer find some Gold Ore? What skills and equipment would you need? During your travels you will find many items, some will be given to you by other players or NPCs and others will be lying on the ground. When an object lies on the ground, you can right-click on it to display the Action Menu. You can use the Action Menu to Examine the object, Take the object, or perform other actions in it. PlaneShift has a built-in advisor system. This system allows any player to become an advisor and answer questions from other players. To ask a question of an advisor, you need to use the /advisor command in your Chat Window. For example: /advisor I can't move my character! In addition, Anything you type in the Help channel of the Chat Window will be sent as an advice request automatically. |
