Chapter 1. Introducing Jenkins Enterprise by CloudBees

Introduction

Jenkins Enterprise by CloudBees (refered to as Jenkins Enterprise in this document) is for organizations that use Jenkins (or Hudson) to improve software quality and struggling to support increasing number of projects as a result of wider adoption of Continuous Integration practices and/or desire faster resolutions on OSS issues.

Jenkins Enterprise is the Continuous Integration Server based on open source Jenkins that helps Jenkins administrators seamlessly support growing installations due to ever-increasing teams, projects and jobs while they get support on OSS Jenkins.

It is led by key contributors (including the founder) from Jenkins and it provides add-on plugins that focus on typical Jenkins-related growth challenges faced by enterprises.

With Jenkins Enterprise, organizations can continue to be agile, deliver better products as they easily support large number of jobs/projects/teams, bring in sophisticated role-based security and optimize utilization of resources in Jenkins while getting rapid resolutions on issues on Jenkins.

This is a installation guide for Jenkins Enterprise.

About Jenkins Enterprise and Nectar

Jenkins Enterprise is based on the Jenkins Long Term Support (LTS) releases, and a refresh build will be released every time the Jenkins community does an LTS release, which is roughly every 3 months. For major Jenkins Enterprise feature releases, version numbers are listed as yy.mm. For example, Jenkins Enterprise version 12.11 was released in November of 2012.

Note

Although the Jenkins Enterprise release versions are named on as yy.mm, the downloadable artifacts are named as 1.x.y.z where 1.x.y is a Jenkins LTS based on the 1.x weekly release, and z is a Jenkins Enterprise build number. This is so that an existing Jenkins package can do an in-place installation of the files without having to uninstall Jenkins packages.

About Nectar

Nectar was a product offered by CloudBees. It was built on a proprietary Jenkins code base, released every 6 months with patches released every 6 weeks.

CloudBees has moved from the proprietary Jenkins code base to the Jenkins Long Term Support Release. Customers can upgrade to Jenkins Enterprise just as they do for Nectar or Jenkins. The CloudBees proprietary plugins continue to work as they did before.

Note

Nectar 11.10 was architected to be built from Jenkins LTS release. Consequently, Jenkins Enterprise from CloudBees is technically a rebrand of Nectar 11.10.
